2013-01-29 [ancienteye]: I just noticed something. :o The people around Fern that she sees as /people/ instead of /its/ all seem to fall into one of three categories (except Aspen and Nova, they stand individual). There are the people that are assets to her, yet do not know her true nature and therefore could be liabilities if she's honest with them (Chris). The second is the people she can be honest with and agree with her, so she loosens up a bit around them (Luki and Dean). Lastly are the ones that have been with her for so long that she is perfectly comfortable around them and actually shows true emotion, not just around them, but directed /towards/ them (her being playful with Mark and yelling/throwing a shoe at Graham).

If it's the second, than he's probably more neutral than evil and is only with them for the sake of loyalty (which should be unlikely given who Fern is and what her stand on loyalty is).

2013-02-05 [ancienteye]: For future reference (since I just noticed that I never addressed this) there is a good reason that Fern is closer to Mark--and even Graham--than she ever was with her other litter-mates. The one that got arrested was a brat that stuck around to use Fern's influence to get what /he/ wanted, and the one that got killed was actually very cowardly. The only good thing he ever did in his life was contact the government, and even that was an attempt to save himself. As you can tell, it back-fired. :P
This also addresses the fact that while Fern has no problem with being used as a means to an end, she will not tolerate people getting in the way of her own goals.
